From Fashion Week, to the numerous tradeshows that engulf Las Vegas this
month, fashion is having its way with the Eco movement. Colors that are "hot" on the list include jade, jasper, emerald, peridot, spruce, and cedar. And the color isn't the only thing fashion for the Fall/Winter 2008 season will have in common. Eco Friendly fashion has been taking the world by storm, from designers like Debra Lindquist to your teenage neighbor that re-designs clothing from the thrift store.
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Los Angeles honored the trend by including in their Spring/Summer 2008 week event, "Green" shows such as The Gallery, and Eco-Ganik. Linda Laudermilk took LA by the balls with their BP gas station show. René Geneva Design, whose Fashion Week debut was in The Gallery's Humanitarian Fashion Show, dominated the stage with unique and future-modern looks that spanned from the green wedding gown to sexy corsets, to funky evening dresses, that were entirely organic.
Ms. Geneva has a long history in the Eco-movement that proceeds the quickly rising trend by some years. She has been in business for over 10 years and has been working directly with her Fair Trade labor in developing communities, primarily with women and helping to empower workers by teaching them technically advanced sewing skills. Historically, her love of travel and exploration, combined with an interest in people brought her to the realization that more needed to be done to protect the communities that produce clothing. Inspired by her 'green architect' friend in 2004, she dumped her conventional wisdom and turned exclusively to "eco-friendly" fabrics. Her first ready-to-wear collection for Spring 2008 included designs from hand-made fabrics that came from indigenous communities that she has been a part of in Central American and Indo-Asia. She also introduced a program that certifies her clothing "carbon neutral", a first in the high fashion industry. It quickly became noticed by high fashion boutiques, the media, and Fashion Week.
This upcoming Fall 2008 season, she predicts that the Eco-fashion movement will carry new meaning. "Designers are catching on and catching up," says René, who has always managed to design 'fashion forward'. "With more styles and textiles to choose from, its not as necessary to tromp through the jungles of a foreign land to find interesting fabrics that have been grown organically." Because of this, she notes, we're going to begin to see well known high-fashion designers include organic fabrics in their lines. Whether its to follow a trend, or because their heart is in the movement, "all it can do is benefit both the planet and the consumer." adds Geneva. We're betting that this attitude, combined with her creative efforts in fashion, will help her to become a more 'well-known' designer.
