My daughters high-school would travel every year to the Gulf Coast to clean up the beaches. Other high schools would also participate. They camped on the beach, had loads of fun and really bonded as a group and with other groups.

So what's the chance of organizing "ecotours" with the local state and city governments to get people to help with a needed project for the good of the environment.

I think their are already vacations like this, but with the cost of fuel I wonder how more local vacation would work.

sounds great... the local schools in Japan do a regular beach clean, as do surfers....they make a party of it......there are alote of issues regarding putting tetra concete blocks in the ocean to save the coast line, which of course costs big money going into construction companies pockets....and ruining surfing beaches. the reall issue here is deforesting the nearby forest and mountains and the erosion that happens after that....I think there are alote of local projects to be done anywhere at this time....mountain, river, sea fields, marshes, for birds animals.....and even making local community gardens in the city.
Yes I really think EVERY local community can make a party of cleaning up their own messes... Local city officials, local schools, local businesses can all get involved..

The hard part is the in-between person keeping it REAL and abouve board to make sure the objective of cleaning up is the end result, and not just a media fest!
